Plates & Tubes - 1 Following is the procedure I followed for forming and silver soldering the plates and tubes of the boiler. Also shown. is the installation of the assorted threaded bushings that will hold the many different fittings. The bushings are made from a cast piece of Gunmetal or Bronze. This material was supplied from Blackgates.
Chiefly calcium and magnesium salts dissolved in boiler water deposit on tube surfaces as deposits and/or scale when water evaporates. This reduces heat transfer increases tube metal temperature and leads to ruptured boiler tubes; and an increase in fuel consumption. Scale formation is prevented by removal of these hardness salts.

Feb 12 2018 · In a fire tube or shell boiler the hot combustion gases produced by the burner are passed through small tubes arranged in a pressurised cylindrical drum and surrounded by water. Heat energy is transferred to the water which is heated up until it becomes steam.
English engineer Robert Stephenson applies steam power to locomotives and his Rocket becomes a commercial success. Water tube steam boiler 1867. George Babcock and Stephen Wilcox discovered the water tube steam boiler in the US where water flows through the pipes. The device was used in 1882 to generate electricity.
The watertube boiler designed by D&H consultant John Muhlfeld generated steam at 350 psi. #1400 was a 2 cylinder cross-compound with a two-axle booster at rear of tender. The large pipe draped over the top of the smokebox carried the exhaust from the HP cylinder to the LP cylinder on the other side. DATA FOR THE HORATIO ALLEN
In a steam engine the firebox is the area where the fuel is burned producing heat to boil the water in the boiler. The common steam locomotive boiler is a horizontal straight fire tube boiler with riveted cylindrical boiler courses a stayed internal firebox at the rear and a smokebox at the front. Operating pressure ranges up to 300 psi. The boiler shell is made up of cylindrical sections or courses which may be straight or tapered.
At the end of 1924 the American Locomotive Co. (Alco) Works at Schenectady produced the world's first main line locomotive with a high-pressure water-tube boiler. This was a 2-8-0 goods locomotive called No. 1400 Horatio Allen which was built for the Delaware & Hudson. This used two-cylinder compound expansion and had a 350psi boiler.
Feb 12 2013 · They were also exported to South America India and Sri Lanka; where some did remain steam powered to the very end. Their boilers are more like flash boilers than drum type water tube boilers used in marine and stationary service. Here is the locomotive I was thinking of; it was the LNER W1 class of which a single example number 10000 was built.
The following brief description of the steam locomotive boiler will acquaint inspectors with its construction and summarize the inspection procedure. For repair information and additional construction illustrations the new NBIC Appendix H Steam Locomotive Fire Tube Boiler Repair is recommended.
With a boiler pressure of 30 pounds this injector will lift the water 5 feet and at ordinary working pressure the steam will have power to lift the water to a height not likely to arise in locomotive practice.
Oct 14 2019 · Of the designs that have been developed over the years the LaMont principle has been the most recognized as effective for transportation use; this continually circulates feedwater at high speed through the waterwall tubes then passes the flow through cyclonic steam separators for very effective removal of priming/foaming effect -- this incidentally enabling a simplified form of Porta-McMahon
Locomotives typically generated much more steam for a given physical size boiler than a stationary boiler would (for example a power plant boiler). They accomplish this by using a power draft-inducing mechanism (the smokestack and nozzle) which draws huge amounts of air through the grate to allow coal to be burned very rapidly.
When heated the water turns to an invisible vapor known as steam. The volume of water expands as it turns to steam inside the boiler creating high pressure. The expansion of steam pushes the pistons that connect to the driving wheels that operate the locomotive. Coal or oil are the fuels used for heating the water (coal is shown in the diagram).

Steam at a high velocity passes from the boiler into the tube A and striking the feed-water at B is itself condensed but imparts momentum to the water to send it rushing along into the delivery pipe E with sufficient force to raise the check-valve against the pressure inside and pass into the boiler. As the current of water could not be ...
